If I Was Peanut Butter, I'd Be Smooth

I love music. Silence doesn't exist in my head. On top of the constant list of things to do running through my mind, screaming at me to get done, is music. Some songs I love, some I just can't get out of my head that drive me crazy into the wee hours of the morning, but always music. I'm convinced we all have a soundtrack.

Scene 1 - Awake slowly with the light just beginning to creep in between the blinds. Queue 'Bittersweet Symphony'.

Scene 2 - Coffee is brewing, dog is running around the back yard waking up as well, crisp breeze blowing in from the open sliding door. Queue 'Damn it Feels Good to be a Gangsta'...

You get the idea.

Now I want coffee...

I have a strange collection of music ranging from classical to oldies, soft rock, classic rock, metal, blues...and even a few choice country and old school hip hop. I like "world music" with unique tones not found on radio stations, and I like deep tracks of popular bands. I'm not indie in any way though. I don't wear thick-framed eye-glasses with a corduroy jacket and black beret so I can dress like all the other non-conformists who look exactly the same. I like what I like and for no other reason than I like it. Nostalgia, mood, energy, and situations help make up my music library. While I may not like every song out there, I have an appreciation for what music offers people. It's actually how I feel about art as well...Not a Warhol fan, but I appreciate his impact in the art world.

One easy go-to is classic rock for me. I love how the guitar meant something in their hands and their heads were "free" and it just flowed. Pushing out more emphasis on the instruments than digital editing is how it should be done. And damn if Stevie Ray Vaughan can't invoke the smoker/whiskey drinker in all of us. I recently came across some stuff by Grace Potter that I'm kind of impressed with. I heard the "If I was from Paris" song on the radio and, while I wanted to like it, it was a little too...music-industry-porn if you know what I mean. There is a constant tendency to 'girlie-up' girl rockers and it takes away from the kind of artist they are. There's a live version of the song on YouTube that really shows her ability and links her to greats like Heart and Janis Joplin, a lot more rough than the studio edit, and not as "pleasing to the eye" but the sound is real.

Tonight though, it's Tricky, Hell is Around the Corner, with Portishead. Wine does that to me. Trip-hop is another favorite and any time you can pair Tricky with Portishead, it's love. Dave Matthews had a song that was terrible (just one?) but Paul Oakenfold made it amazing...When the World Ends. I have to admit, this song does it for me (Paul's version). I have the most amazing video for it in my head. It's the kind of song you listen to alone (or not), in the dark, with a drink, and if you live anywhere else, it should be raining (we just don't get a lot of that here). Now I miss rain...

Since there aren't enough of you out there to ask what your most unique music go-to is, I leave you with thoughts of favorite tunes and happy memories. Cheers.

  1. I spent the summer teaching my oldest about the history of rock music. It was pretty awesome. I don't think enough people have an actual appreciation for music. They may listen to it, but they don't get it at all.

It's supposed to speak to your soul.
